Vending Machine History and Use

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

A vending machine is a coin-actuated object with which various objects may be sold. Vending machines are sometimes mistaken for coin-operated amusement arcade games or juke radios.

The original commercial use of vending machines happened early in the 18th century in England, at which point coin-operated “honour boxes” were utilized to retail snuff and tobacco.

These machines were also employed in the British-American civilisations during the era.The original targeted, commercial use of vending machines took place in the United States circa 1888, at which point devices were exploited to push the retail of chewing gum to townships in which gum sales could not otherwise be made, such as the platforms of the NYC elevated railway.

The United States’ industry was restricted largely to penny-candy vending from then til 1926, at which point the modern occurrence of automatic selling began with the development of cigarette vending machines. The original soft-drink vending machine was created around 1937.

While the US focused on its weapons strength prior to its entry in the second World War, plant trustees found that employees could not work efficiently for 10, 12, or more hours without a lunch break, so vending machines were seen to be the most expedient procedure of providing refreshments.

In the 1940s and ’50s the vending machine industry was seen largely in plants and factories, and by the close of that period, vending devices were being exploited to vend a whole variety of freshly packaged along with prepackaged items to take the place of and supplement standard in-plant food service mechanisms.

Refrigeration was adapted to vending machines to sell bottled soft drinks. The use of vending machines to retail items for competitive costs all day and night without notice to holidays is now widely understood.

The industry has gone above plants and factories, and machines are commonly placed in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and the like.

Commonly, vending service is provided by companies (operators) who own and place devices on premises owned by others. Those companies provide complete maintenance and service, as well as products for sale, commonly without any a cost to the owners of the premises apart from sometimes a servicing cost.Vending machines are used in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia since the 1880s, when they were made use of to sell confectionery or tobacco products.

During modern years, the vending device business in those countries has closely paralleled the expansion of vending in the United States.

Vending in Japan originated in earnest during the 1960s and furthered vigorously into a major aspect in that country’s distribution process.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Bear a plastic water bottle to your own peril; the tide of popular view is turning away from you. From popular rating documentaries, to articles and campaigns, the biggest topic around is the terror of bottled water and the waste its industry pumps out.

The production, transportation and disposal of water in petrochemical plastic bottles consumes big quantities of water alongside energy, and generates large amounts of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the upcoming documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig sums it up “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The team of Tapped are plugging the documentary with an across-America roadshow, receiving sponsorships from Americans to take down their water bottle abuse and exchanging their old plastic water bottle in exchange for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

A short film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. Created by Annie Leonard of the famous ‘The Story of Stuff’, this new film explores the method that is behind tricking Americans into wasting more than hundreds of millions of bottles of water every week, despite the option of a few cents cost for water from the tap. Find the documentary on You Tube.

Through her book ‘Bottlemania’, author Elizabeth Royte investigates one of the biggest marketing tricks of our century and gives a super environmental alarm. She explores the problems we must come to respond to. Who has ownership of the water distribution? What can happen when a bottled-water corporation stakes a claim on your town’s drinking water? Is the water coming from a tap absolutely safe? What really is the environmental cost of producing, transporting and disposing of a single plastic water bottle?

Politicians from everywhere around the globe are beginning to realise that they are required to start the campaign – especially when the meetings in which they collate are high consumers of bottled water. How often do we see a politician at a function drinking from a water bottle. It is probable that they must be able to use a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, claimed “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first place around Australia to ban the retailing of bottled water. About 60 places in the US and a few cities in Canada and the United Kingdom have recently banned the spending of taxpayer funds on bottled water.

It is certain that these issues will be tabled at World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the environment’s most urgent water-related problems.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

The tensile-strength test is inherently futile; during the process of gathering material, the sample is ruined. Although this is not a problem when a large store of the sample material is at hand, nondestructive methods are better for materials that are dear or hard to fabricate or that have been constructed into completed or semifinished products.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive procedure, employed to locate surface breaks and flaws in samples, takes a penetrating liquid, which is either visibly coloured or fluorescent. After being pasted on the surface of the material and allowed to fill into any perceptible cracks, the fluid is wiped off, leaving readily visible breaks and flaws. Similarly, another process, used for nonmetals, uses an electrically charged liquid pasted on the material surface. After excess fluid is cleared off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed onto the sample and attracted to the breaks. Neither of these techniques, however, can identify internal flaws.

Radiation

Internal, as well as external weaknesses, can be detected with X-ray or gamma-ray machines in which the radiation passes through the sample and implicates on an appropriate photographic film. Under some circumstances, it is possible to focus the X rays on a particular plane in the material, allowing a 3rd dimensional view of the flaw markings as well as its position.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of parts takes transmission of sound waves higher than human hearing range within the sample. In the reflection process, a sound wave is sent over one side of the subject, reflected with the far area, and signalled back to a receiver situated at the first end. By isolating a flaw or crack in the test sample, the sound wave is reflected and its movement altered. The actual delay becomes a sign of the location of the mark; a map of the test material can then be formed to locate the area and geometry of the cracks. In the through-transmission technique, the transmitter and receiver need to be started at the opposite areas of the subject; interruptions in the signal of sound waves are found to isolate and measure marks. Usually a water medium is used in which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic traits of a test piece are very much reflected by its overall structure, magnetic techniques are utilized to isolate the location and relative size of flaws and marks. By magnetic testing, an item is employed that consists of a large length of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Placed in the initial coil is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is linked an electrical measuring device. The steady current in the first coil generates the current to react within the secondary coil through the technique of induction. If an iron bar is put into the secondary coil, sharp changes in the second current should indicate defects in the bar. This technique only finds differentiations between areas in the length of a rod and does not locate long or continuous imperfections very much. An analogous method, using eddy currents induced with a primary coil, also may be utilized to locate errors and breaks. A steady current is induced in the test item. Cracks that lie in the track of the current alter resistance of the test sample; this determination will then be measured by the correct items.

Infrared

Infrared techniques have also been employed to isolate material continuity in involved constructual situations. By testing the durability of adhesive conjoinments with the sandwich core and facing sheets in a ordinary sandwich structure material such as plywood, for example, heat is used against the face of the sandwich skin piece. In the case that bond lines are found to be continuous, those core materials provide a heat marking within the surface object, and the localised temperatures of the skin then fall lightly on those bond lines. When a bond line appears to be too small, missing, or erroneous, however, the local temperature should not change. Infrared photography of the surface will then reveal the placement and shape of the broken adhesive. A similar method employs thermal coatings that change appearance on reaching a specific degree.

Conclusively, nondestructive procedures also are being found to reveal a total understanding of the mechanical characteristics of a test item. Ultrasonics and thermal processes appear to be the most valuable in this circumstance.
