As the magnetic characteristics of a test piece are largely influenced by its overall structure, magnetic processes are utilized to measure the situation and approximate geometry of weaknesses and imperfections. In magnetic testing, an item is used that holds a sizeable coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Held within this initial object is a shorter coil (the secondary coil), to which is connected an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the primary coil causes current to move in the secondary coil by way of the process of induction. When an iron bar is placed into the secondary coil, sharp changes in the second current can signal marks in the bar. This technique only finds differentiations in areas along the length of a bar and does not detect elongated or continued flaws that much. A parallel skill, utilizing eddy currents induced by a primary coil, also should be utilized to detect marks and breaks. A steady current is induced within the test sample. Flaws that lie in the track of the current alter resistance of the test object; this determination should be measured by the correct items.

Infrared
