Vending Machine History and Use

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

A vending machine is a coin-operated object through which differentiating objects are sold. Vending machines are sometimes mistaken for coin-actuated amusement games or juke machines.

The first business use of vending machines happened early in the 18th century in England, at which time coin-actuated “honour boxes” were employed to vend snuff and tobacco.

These devices were also in use with the British-American colonies later in the period. The first known methodical, marketed employment of vending machines occurred in the United States circa 1888, at which point vending machines were employed to grow the retail of chewing gum to locations where gum sales otherwise could not be made, such as the waiting areas of the New York City elevated railway.

The United States’ industry was kept for the most part to penny-candy vending from then to 1926, when the modern period of automatic retailing opened by the development of cigarette vending machines. The original soft-drink vending machine was developed around 1937.

While the US started its army strength prior to its entry into the second World War, plant trustees estimated that workers could not work at full function for 10, 12, or further hours without a refreshment point, and vending machines were proved the most practical method of giving food and beverages.

In the 1940s and ’50s the vending machine industry was concentrated in plants and factories, and by the end of that decade, vending devices were being used to retail a larger variety of freshly provided alongside prepackaged items to replace or go with standard in-plant food providing processes.

Refrigeration was added to vending devices to sell bottled soft drinks. The use of vending devices to sell items at competitive costs 24/7 without notice to breaks is at present widely utilized.

The commercialisation has developed above plants and factories, and machines are often provided in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and the like.

Often, vending services are provided by companies (operators) that own and place devices at places owned by others. The corporations provide total maintenance and service, as well as products for sale, typically without any cost to the owners of the premises apart from sometimes a servicing fee.Vending devices are utilized in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia from the 1880s, at which point they were employed to sell confectionery and tobacco products.

In current times, the vending machine market in these countries has closely paralleled the history of vending machines in America.

Vending in Japan started with marked earnest during the 1960s and furthered enthusiastically to a major factor in that country’s distribution process.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Take a plastic water bottle to your own risk; the sway of popular view is turning away from you. From high rating documentaries, to papers and politics, the biggest topic on the soapbox is the terror around bottled water and the waste that the industry creates.

The processing, transporting and removal of water in petrochemical plastic bottles consumes huge waste of water as well as energy, and generates ridiculous amounts of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the recent documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig sums it up “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The crew behind Tapped are plugging the film with their across-America roadshow, taking sponsorships from Americans to lower their water bottle numbers and swapping their empty plastic water bottle for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

Another such film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. From the pen of Annie Leonard of the well-received ‘The Story of Stuff’, this film shows the method that is behind tricking Americans into purchasing more than five hundred million bottles of water each and every week, as opposed to a few cents cost for clean tap water. Check out this animation on You Tube.

Through her book ‘Bottlemania’, author Elizabeth Royte investigates one of the most massive marketing cons of our century and provides a super environmental wakeup call. She investigates the red flags we must at some point respond to. Who appropriates our water supply? What could happen when a bottled-water factory possesses your town’s water supply? Is the water that comes from a tap entirely safe? What is really the environmental footprint of producing, transportation and disposal of one plastic water bottle?

Politicians all around the nation are beginning to understand that they have to do something – markedly when the meetings at which they collate are huge consumers of bottled water. How often do we witness a politician in a political debate sipping from a water bottle. Why can’t they should be able to drink from a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, said “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first community around Australia to prevent the sale of bottled water. At least 60 places in the States and some towns in Canada and the United Kingdom have prevented spending taxpayer money on bottled water.

It is doubtless that this problem will be brought to the table come World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the globe’s most urgent water-related problems.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

The tensile-strength test is inherently destructive; at the time of the process of collecting information, the sample is ruined. While this is not a problem when a decent supply of the sample material is at hand, nondestructive techniques are desirable for materials that are dear or hard to fabricate or that have been formed into finished or semifinished samples.

Liquids

One common nondestructive method, utilized to find surface breaks and weaknesses in metal samples, employs a penetrating fluid, which needs to be luminescently coloured or fluorescent. After being rubbed on the surface of the material and set to impress into any tiny breaks, the fluid is rubbed away, leaving brightly perceptible imperfections and flaws. An analogous test, used for nonmetals, requires an electrically charged fluid smeared on the material surface. After the extra fluid is rubbed off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the surface of the sample and draws to the breaks. Neither of these methods, however, can find internal imperfections.

Radiation

Internal, as well as external imperfections, can be found through the use of X-ray or gamma-ray machines in which the radiation scans the metal and implicates on an appropriate photographic film. In some cases, it is possible to target the X rays onto a single section within the metal, allowing a 3-dimensional description of the flaw shape as well as its site.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of sections requires transmission of sound waves out of human hearing range within the test material. By the reflection technique, a sound wave is targeted from one area of the test material, reflected off the opposite side, and signalled to a receiver that is situated at the original point. When impinging on a weakness or crack in the sample, the signal is reflected and its transmission disrupted. The actual delay is a measure of the location of the flaw; a map of the test piece can be generated to locate the location and shape of the weaknesses. Using the through-transmission process, the transmitter and receiver are placed on the opposite areas of the subject; delays in the movement of sound waves are studied to locate and measure weaknesses. Often a water medium is used by which transmitter, sample, and receiver are immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a test piece are very much influenced by its overall shape, magnetic methods can be utilized to isolate the placement and general shape of weaknesses and cracks. By magnetic testing, a tool is employed that holds a big length of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Nested inside this primary piece is a shorter coil (the secondary coil), to which is linked an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the initial coil causes electrical current to react through the secondary coil by way of the process of induction. When an iron bar is put into the secondary coil, sharp changes in the further current should indicate imperfections in the bar. This technique only locates differentiations in areas on the length of a sample and cannot detect elongated or continuous flaws very easily. A similar skill, using eddy currents induced by a primary coil, also may be utilized to locate errors and marks. A steady current is induced within the test subject. Flaws that exist across the signal of the current change resistance of the test item; this alteration should be measured by better tools.

Infrared

Infrared processes also have been used to find material continuity in complex constructual objects. In testing the value of adhesive joints with the sandwich core and facing sheets of a usual sandwich construction sample like plywood, for example, heat is applied in the face of the sandwich skin item. When bond lines are found to be continuous, the core materials provide a heat signature within the surface piece, and the local temperatures of the face then appear spaciously along those bond lines. Where the bond line appears to be inadequate, missing, or in error, however, temperature should not change. Infrared photography of the surface can then isolate the geography and area of the flawed adhesive. A similar process uses thermal coatings to change appearance on reaching a set degree.

Conclusively, nondestructive procedures also are found to permit a whole understanding of the mechanical aspects of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal methods appear to be the most promising in this circumstance.
